Journey from West to East: course

This document is the syllabus for a specialized music course taught by Dr. Robert Casteels at Emaar International School, Singapore, during the 2008 and 2009 academic years.

The course offered an extensive ethnomusicological survey, examining the traditional and contemporary musical forms of the following regions:

• Middle East / West Asia: Turkish, Arab, Jewish, Persian, Azeri, Armenian, and Georgian music.

• Central and South Asia: Uzbek, Afghan, Pakistani, Indian, and Nepalese music.

• East Asia: Chinese, Mongolian, Korean, and Japanese music.

• Southeast Asia: Philippino, Vietnamese, Khmer (Cambodian), Thai, Burmese, Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian music.
