Mozart – Varèse special project

  • Mozart - Varèse was the title of a thought-provoking multi-media concert collaboration between actors and The Philharmonic Winds in 2002. In a startling and mind-opening contrast, the concert alternated movements from Mozart’s Gran Partita music with Varese’s works, interspersed with the reading of extracts from the correspondence and writings of these two misunderstood rhythmicians and rebels of the 18th and 20th c.

The concert Mozart – Varèse was a unique and thought-provoking multi-media collaboration that took place in 2002, featuring The Philharmonic Winds.

Core Concept & Structure

The program was designed around a startling and mind-opening contrast, structured as follows:

  1. Musical Alternation: Movements from Mozart’s famous Gran Partita were juxtaposed and alternated with works by the 20th-century composer Edgard Varèse.

  2. Thematic Interludes: These musical sections were interspersed with the reading of extracts from Mozart's letters and Varèse's writings.

Thematic Focus: Misunderstood rebels

The conceptual link between the two composers centered on their shared identity as misunderstood rhythmicians and rebels of their respective eras (the 18th and 20th centuries). By presenting their music and words side-by-side, the concert highlighted unexpected common ground between their revolutionary approaches to rhythm and musical language.
