Aenhoort, ick sal beghinnen

Meisjeskoor a cappella

Programme notes

Aenhoort, ick sal beghinnen" is an old Flemish song dating from the European Middle Ages. The title translates to: Listen, a song I will start to sing. The earliest document containing the complete melody is dated 1539. The song is a plea for aid, expressing deep sadness or imploring for help when the soul is wounded. Casteels created an arrangement of this melody for SSAA a cappella (soprano I & II, alto I & II). He composed this version during the years he was actively involved with the female voice choir Nausikäa in Brussels, serving as a composer, arranger, and accompanist.
