beatIT

This composition is a collaboration between composer Robert Casteels and electro-acoustician Peter Kellock. The title of the composition -beatIT- refers to the interplay between the human performer and the technology in the form of a new and unique software-based system called the Rhythm Synth. Created to perform highly complex rhythmic textures using synthesized and sampled sounds, the Rhythm Synthis an automated percussion device designed to create, layer and filter rhythmic patterns. It allows the user to explore a vast sonic landscape, ranging from the straightforward grooves of popular music to "superhuman" polyrhythms and experimental rhythmic monstrosities. Throughout the piece beatIT, polyrhythms reach such a level of complexity that they often obscure the underlying pulse. As the percussionists navigate a diverse array of membrane, metal, and wood instruments, a harmonious dialogue emerges: the machine provides synthetic precision while the humans provide acoustic soul, resulting in a respectful and engaging interaction for the listener.
