COughin'COffin

Programme notes

COughin’COffin is a collaborative work based on an interplay between human performers and technology. The latter takes the form of two unique and new inventions: the Metasynthetic Orchestrator of Polyrhythmic Obliquity invented by Peter Kellock and the Fryproneinvented by Dirk Stromberg. The Furnace is a new and unique software-based rhythm synthesiser, an automated percussion system designed to create, layer and filter rhythmic patterns, producing complex rhythmic textures which are highly manipulable in performance. The sonic landscapes it creates range from straightforward 4/4 “club grooves” to superhuman polyrhythms and experimental rhythmic monstrosities. The Fryprone is a custom-made electronic musical instrument that can mimic the organic behaviour and tactile immediacy of acoustic instruments. Beyond sound, the Fryprone can control lighting and cameras during telematic (remote/virtual) performances.

Structured as an arch, the sonic events in 1COughin’COffin1 unfold until a mid-point after which these events reappear in reverse order. The whole composition is a journey through seven gates.
