Programme notes

Belgian soprano Lilith Verhelst sings the eponymous poem by the Dutch writer Nicolaas Beets (1814-1903) whilst playing with the canvas animated by Pete Kellock’s sounds of the 5th piece of the concert entitled time:crystals. Meanwhile composer Robert Casteels plays with the sphere, another e-instrument invented by Dirk Stromberg. Fingers articulate pressure sensors. Accelerometers require the use of wrists to orient the two halves of the sphere. In short, the custom built-in software of the Sphere allows the performer to sculpt the interdependent aspects of amplitude, timbre and pitch.

De tijd gaat, dat is waar, maar wij gaan meê; Wij stappen ongemerkt met elke tel Een stukje nader naar ons einddoel heen, Naar d' ondoorgrondelijke eeuwigheid.

De klok slaat met een vaste, ijz're hand Ons leven korter, dag en nacht zijn even Vlug weggewaaid als een voorbijgegane droom. Wat blijft, is enkel wat het hart heeft bewaard.

Laat ons den tijd die God ons toewees, wijs Besteeden; dat ons hart in alle deelen Zoo rein en edel blijv', dat wij, als 't uur Van afscheid slaat, in vrede heengaan mogen!

English translation

The time passes, that is true, but we go with it; We step unnoticed with every count A little closer toward our final destination, Toward the inscrutable eternity.

The clock strikes with a fixed, iron hand Making our life shorter; day and night are just as Swiftly blown away as a dream that has passed. What remains is only what the heart has preserved.

Let us spend the time that God allotted us, wisely; May our heart in every way Remain so pure and noble, that we, when the hour Of farewell strikes, may depart in peace!]
