Decennium

Solo piano

Programme notes

Decennium is a one-minute composition for solo piano, written in response to a call from the Composers Society (Singapore) [CS(S)] to commemorate its tenth anniversary.

The piece is structured around two distinct musical elements, each representing a facet of the occasion:

- a short, specific rhythmic pattern based on the acronym of the CS(S) represents an inviting "Happy Birthday" call to the organization.

- the pan-intervallic chord, that is a chord containing all the simple intervals feasible on a well-tempered piano.Represents the artistic open-mindedness of the CS(S). The pan-intervallic chord is a significant recurring feature in the composer's body of work, having also been utilized in the following compositions: Hanging Gardens op. 105, Cụ Rùa op. 106 and Aqua Ignis op. 107.
