Kerstliedsuite (Vierde)

Onder impuls van koordirigent Lou Van Cleynenbreugel bewerkte Casteels reeds in 1981 twaalf Europese kerstliederen voor gelijkstemmig koor en blazerskwintet. Zijn Tweede Suite bevatte zes kerstliederen voor koor en dubbel koperkwintet en de Derde achttien kerstliederen in een bewerking voor koor, houtblazerskwintet, harp en slagwerk. Voor zijn Vierde Kerstliedsuite koos Casteels de volgende twaalf Vlaamse kerstliederen in de vorm van een quodlibet : Er is een roos ontsprongen [Keulen, 1599], Nu syt willekome [17e eeuw], Door de liefde wilt ontwekken [Brugge, 1879], Kind'ren zwijgt [15e eeuw], De herdertjes lagen bij nachte [Utrecht, 18e eeuw], Er is een kindetje geboren [18e eeuw], Hoe leit dit kindeken [17e eeuw], Er kwamen drie koningen [Brugge, 1870], Herders, Hij is geboren [Leuven, 1682], Susa Nina [Armand Preud'homme], Herders brengt melk en zoetigheid [Duinkerke, 1696], Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan [1609]. Doorheen de ganse suite klinken hier en daar, onopvallend, snippertjes van het bekendste kerstlied, Stille Nacht , dat geen Vlaams kerstlied is. Deze Vierde Kerstliedsuite voor beiaard eindigt vreedzaam met het slotmotief van Stille Nacht.

This fourth suite of Christams songs comes on the tail of three previous arrangements of Christmas songs by Casteels. Firstly, in 1981, Casteels arranged a medley of twelve European Christmas songs for choir and wind quintet. His Second Suite comprised six Christmas songs for choir and double brass quintet. For his Third Suite, Casteels arranged eighteen other Christmas songs for choir, woodwind quintet, harp and percussion. For his Fourth Christmas Suite for carillon, or Vierde Kerstliedsuite, Casteels selected twelve Flemish Christmas songs in the form of a quodlibet. Throughout the whole suite appear here and there, always discreetly like a distant ostinato, snippets of the most well-known Christmas songs of all, Silent Night. This suite for carillon ends peacefully with the coda of Silent Night.
