Programme notes

La Vallée des Cloches (The Valley of Bells) is the fifth and final piece from Maurice Ravel's suite of five piano pieces titled Miroirs (Mirrors), composed between 1904 and 1905. Ravel evokes bell sounds, creating a rich, shimmering texture that suggests the distant chimes of a valley filled with bells. Casteels, then its Music Director, orchestrated the piece for the Philharmonic Winds.
