Mare Maje, Scura Maje

Vocal trio a cappella

Programme notes

Mare Majje means My Husband in Vastese, the dialect that is only spoken in the town of Vasto. Vasto is a town on the Adriatic coast in the region of southern Abruzzo, Italy. Lamberto Pietropoli harmonized. In this poignant folksong, which probably dates from the 8th c., a widow expresses her feelings for her deceased husband.

Sabrina Zuber is the founder and director of Bellepoque, a non-profit music and theatre company that focuses on European repertoire from 1870 to 1940 (operas, operettas, cabaret, and art songs). She has produced numerous shows in which Casteels served as the Music Director, conductor, or pianist. She has participated as a soprano in several premieres of his compositions.
