The sound produced by an orchestra practicing on stage before the concert starts is extraordinarily complex soundscape, like a painting by Jackson Pollock. This chaos is meaningful because it has unity in purpose and content. From this chaos emerges the tuning. The sound of an orchestra tuning never fails to move me as the multiple disparate voices zoom into one pitch that will create organic unity and mental focus on the single aim to make the best music. No explanation should be given to the audience prior to the performance. A verbal explanation may be given straight after the performance. Players practice with conviction. The tuning procedure is real.
