Circumstances of creatioon

The premiere of Portrait was the last concert given by The Brussels Wind Ensemble, a group created by Casteels and flautist Chris Foubert. The ensemble specializes in chamber music for wind instruments, particularly pieces for the wind octet (two oboes, two clarinets, two horns, and two bassoons) and wind nonets (including a double bass or bass clarinet). Soon afer the premiere, Casteels left for London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and thereafter at the Juilliard School of New York.
