Song of the Open Road (1)
1 high male voice and piano
Programme notes
The work, scored for high male voice and orchestra, was first composed in 2008 with piano accompaniment before being fully orchestrated in 2010. The text is taken from Song of the Open Road, a cornerstone piece in Walt Whitman's (1819–1892) monumental collection, Leaves of Grass. Whitman’s poem is a powerful invitation to communal travel and shared joy, celebrating the freedoms and virtues inherent in journeying on the open road. The poem concludes with the heartfelt pledge to stick together as long as we live. Structurally, the musical language reflects the poem's rhetoric: the composer has meticulously associated each key literary element - including the personal pronouns ('you,' 'I,' 'we'), thematic nouns ('road,' 'Soul'), and contrasting expressions - with a corresponding musical motif, such as a characteristic pitch, interval, chord, or rhythmic figure.
George D. Bishop is an academic researcher and author, primarily in the field of psychology and health. He has been affiliated with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Yale-NUS College. George studied the piano under Robert Casteels.
