Circumstances of creation
Stomp is a pedagogical composition designed for a percussion ensemble of seven players. The work revolves around the core idea of forcefully and emphatically putting one's foot down. Throughout the piece, the performers execute the titular action -a forceful stomp on the stage floor- at precisely seven different points, each accompanied by an energetic, vocal exclamation. The composer, Robert Casteels, established the music program at St Joseph's Institution International (SJII) when the school was founded in Singapore in 2007.
