Toccata

Sedert de renaissance is een toccata (van het Italiaans, “aanraken”) een stuk voor toetsinstrumenten, in tegenstelling tot een cantata (een vocaal stuk) of een sonate (een instrumentaal stuk). Nadien verdween deze classificatie: zo duidt een toccata een virtuoos stuk muziek aan, ongeacht de instrumentatie. Stricto sensu is elk stuk voor beiaard een toccata. Tijdens het componeren van deze Toccata opus 124 kwam het idee op om dit stuk “tokkel-toccata” of “tokkelata” te noemen, in referentie tot het luidruchtig gerammel van een beiaardklavier, de tuimelaars, klepeldraden en klepels, kortom een ongelooflijk lawaai dat de luisteraar op straat uiteraard niet hoort. Uiteindelijk vond de componist deze humor flauw en ongepast voor een virtuoos stuk. Opus 124 werd dus gewoonweg een Toccata, gebaseerd op drie elementen: de reine kwint do – sol (begin, overgangen en einde), een hele-toonstoonladder en een pentatone toonladder. De notenwaarden vertragen bij elk van de vijf onderdelen (van zestiende noten naar triolen van achtste noten naar achtste noten naar vierde noten), terwijl het tempo versnelt tot een uitbundige finale.

A toccata (from the Italian “to touch”) is a piece for keyboard instruments, as opposed to a cantata (a vocal work) or a sonata (an instrumental work). This distinction disappeared after the baroque period. A toccata now refers to a fast and virtuosic work, regardless of its instrumentation. Strictly speaking, each piece for carillon is a toccata. This composition is based on three elements: the perfect fifth c-g (in the beginning, during each transition and at the end), a whole-tone scale and a pentatonic motif. In each of the five subsections, the rhythmic value of the pitches decreases (from semiquavers to triplet quavers to quavers to crotchets) whilst the tempo relentlessly increases towards an exuberant finale.
