Tussen hemel en aarde

Tussen hemel en aarde wijst op de specifieke locatie van een beiaardier, daar geen andere vertolker zo ver afgelegen van zijn publiek speelt. En toch is het werk ook een beeldspraak voor de stadsbewoner: tot waar hij de vertrouwde klanken van “zijn” beiaard kan horen, daar voelt hij zich thuis in zijn stad. Beiaardcultuur is materieel en immaterieel cultureel erfgoed dat typisch is voor Noord-Frankrijk, België en Nederland. De structuur van de compositie Tussen hemel en aarde is driedelig. Het centrale gedeelte is gebaseerd op een reeks van zes tonen vanaf noot fa waarbij alle toonafstanden gelijk zijn: deze anhemitonisch hexatonische toonladder wordt ook de hele-toonstoonladder genoemd. De baspartij draagt de melodie, terwijl de rechterhand een voortdurende stroom van zestiende noten speelt. Het derde deel is een spiegel van het eerste deel: de laatste maat van deel drie komt overeen met de eerste maat van deel één, de voorlaatste maat van deel drie komt overeen met de tweede maat van deel één, enz… De tempo-aanduiding is “zwevend”. 

Programme notes in English

Tussen hemel en aarde means “in between sky and earth”. The title describes the peculiar situation of the carillonneur who performs away from his audience. Tussen hemel en aarde is also a metaphor of the citizen who feels at home and safe in his city as far as he can hear the carillon, even if he is not consciously listening. The structure of the music composition is ternary. A whole tone scale starting on pitch f forms the basis of part three. The melody sounds in the lower part whilst the right hand plays a continuous stream of semiquavers. The third part mirrors the first, in that the last bar of part three corresponds to the first bar of part one, the penultimate bar of part three corresponds to the second bar of part one, and so forth. The tempo marking reads: floating. The graphic appearance of page one of the score represents the so-called city bell of Tienen.
