Vocalise
Male choir and piano
Programme notes
A vocalise is a musical composition for voice alone, without words. In the 19th and 20th centuries, composers began writing vocalises as standalone concert pieces to showcase the beauty and expressive potential of the human voice purely as an instrument. Since there are no lyrics, the listener's focus is entirely on the melodic line, phrasing, and the pure tone color of the voice. Casteels has no recollection for whom he composed this early piece.
