In de winter een beiaardtoren beklimmen om te gaan spelen vergt een ascetische inzet van de beiaardier. Een geluidsgolf verplaatst zich sneller in warme lucht, maar dezelfde geluidsgolf verplaatst zich verder in koude lucht. Een typisch fenomeen op een winterdag is de vorming van een koude laag dicht bij de grond en de vorming van een warmere laag daarboven. Stilte heerst, daar de sneeuw geluid absorbeert. Klanken en geluiden weerkaatsen tegen de warmere bovenlaag, waardoor zij in een winterdag verder hoorbaar zijn. In de compositie ’s Winters wordt de warme bovenlaag verbeeld door herhaalde en vertragende noten, terwijl lange eenzame basnoten de koude onderlaag verbeelden. Tussen deze lagen klinkt een trage melodie. Deze melodie is een palindroom: vanaf een centraal punt zijn de ritmische en melodische motieven omgekeerd.

’s Winters is an archaic genitive form in Dutch. The apostrophe shows the elision of the article des. Des winters means “in wintertime”. To climb the tower to play the carillon in wintertime demands an ascetic engagement. The speed of sound in the air is far from constant. Even though sound travels faster in warm air, it travels farther in cold weather. A cold day often sees the formation of a layer of warmer air above the cold pockets closest to the ground. Snow on the ground muffles noises. Soundwaves from the ground get refracted by the warm air, hence sound is able to travel farther in chilly weather. In the composition ’s Winters, high repeated and decelerating pitches represent the warm layer, whilst long lonesome bass notes represent the cold under layer. A melody is sounded in between these layers. The shape of this melody is a palindrome, that is, rhythmic and melodic patterns are inverted from a central point.
